Athens boasts some romantic spots, great sunsets and majestic reminders of ancient times.
Mainland Greece is nothing short of amazing, with its Meteora monasteries, Delphi, Mount Olympus, and Halkidiki Peninsula.
After visiting many parts of Greece and many Greek islands, I took the time to jot down the ultimate list of the best places to visit in Greece for couples. You’ll learn which islands, cities or areas to visit as a couple, but also which hotels to choose to have wonderful, scenic views to enjoy together.
Santorini
For many years I’ve been thinking that Santorini was nothing but a tourist trap. I hate crowds and touristy places, so there’s no wonder I only visited Santorini in 2021 for the first time. To say that I’ve fallen in love with this Greek island would be an understatement. I’m mad about Santorini and I consider it the most romantic place to treat your partner to. Many couples get married in Santorini or come here for a scenic trash the dress photo session. The flying dress photo sessions are already on the bucket list of many girls dreaming of Santorini.
Check out the nearest island to Santorini; maybe you want to schedule an island hopping adventure and you need some information.
Best Places To Stay in Santorini for Couples
If I were to visit Santorini with my romantic partner, I’d choose to stay in Imerovigli. Oia and Fira are also very beautiful, but they are extremely crowded before the sunset.
Imerovigli sits on the ends of the Caldera, right in front of the Skaros Rock. The scenic view of the cruise ships passing by the volcanic rock makes this village the ideal spot for romance.
Best Hotels in Santorini for Couples
Santorini is one of the most popular destinations for romantic getaways, with its stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the famous Caldera. Here are five of the best hotels for couples in Santorini:
- Canaves Oia Suites & SPA – Located in the picturesque village of Oia, Canaves Oia Suites offers luxurious accommodation in traditional cave houses. Couples will love the private plunge pools, breathtaking views, and excellent spa facilities.
- Andromeda Villas & Spa Resort – This hotel offers traditional cave houses that have been converted into luxurious villas. Each villa features its own private pool, hot tub, and outdoor dining area with stunning views of the caldera. The hotel is located in scenic Imerovigli, 300 m above the Caldera. A swimming pool with views to the Caldera, sun terraces with complimentary sun beds and sunshades, lounging areas with hot tubs are all featured.
- Katikies Hotel – This elegant hotel is situated in the village of Oia and offers a range of luxurious accommodations, including cave suites and private infinity pools. Couples will appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and the hotel’s close proximity to some of the island’s best restaurants and shops. Katikies Hotel sits right in the center of Oia, the place to be in Santorini.
- The Tsitouras Collection – This hotel is located in the village of Firostefani and features a range of unique and luxurious suites, each with their own private pool. The hotel also boasts a traditional Greek restaurant, a spacious sun terrace, and breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. In my view, Firostefani is one of the best locations to stay on Santorini, as it is near the bus terminal and it has many accommodation options with or without views of the Caldera.
- Mystique, A Luxury Collection Hotel – This chic and modern hotel is located in the village of Oia and features a range of luxurious suites and private villas. Couples will love the hotel’s serene atmosphere, top-notch spa facilities, and stunning views of the Aegean Sea. You’ll feel like a celebrity and you’ll celebrate your love in style.
These hotels offer a range of luxurious amenities and breathtaking views, making them perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway in Santorini. While they aren’t exactly cheap, they offer a great value for money. There are less expensive options on Santorini, but they may not be as romantic as the above mentioned hotels.

Crete
Rough yet romantic, Crete is the Greek island that has it all. On Crete you’ll find pink sand beaches, palm tree forests, natural wave pools, 5-star resorts, naturist beaches, mountain trails, lakes, and scenic sunsets. Crete is the largest Greek island, about 100 times bigger than Mykonos and much larger than Santorini.
Here are a few reasons why Crete is a great destination for couples:
- Beautiful Beaches: Crete is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, such as Elafonisi, Balos, and Vai. These beaches are perfect for couples who want to spend quality time together in a romantic setting. Check out the best beaches in Chania to see what I’m talking about.
- Picturesque Villages: The island of Crete is dotted with charming villages, many of which are surrounded by stunning mountains and seascapes. Couples can wander the streets, explore local shops and cafes, and enjoy the relaxed pace of life in these villages. I’d mention Spili and Agia Galini as some of the most romantic villages in Crete. If you visit Spili, consider having dinner at one of the traditional tavernas in the village. Try the lamb, I promise it’s delicious!
- Romantic Sunsets: Crete is known for its stunning sunsets, which are the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening with your partner. Head to a beach or a hilltop for a breathtaking view of the sunset.
- Rich Cultural Heritage: Crete is steeped in history, with ancient ruins and museums that offer an insight into the island’s past. Couples can explore the island together, learning about its rich cultural heritage and taking in the stunning scenery along the way.
Best Places To Stay in Crete for Couples
Chania and Rethymno are two of the best places to stay in Crete for couples.
- The Old Harbor in Chania boasts a scenic view of the sea and of the lighthouse. Even though it may seem a bit touristy, this spot is nothing but charming. I love visiting it each and every time I travel to Crete.
- Rethymno has a stunning waterfront promenade, perfect for watching sunsets and taking photos with your loved one. The old city is also very beautiful, with its cobbled streets and its old buildings, with its tavernas and coffee shops.
- Matala is best for older couples who enjoy history, nature and the great outdoors. However, it can get a bit busy during the high season, so you may want to avoid July, August and September. I’d choose early June or October for a romantic stay in Matala.

Rhodes Island
Rhodes is an island apart, well-known for its unique combination of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Here are several reasons why Rhodes stands apart as a destination for couples and not only:
- Rich history: Rhodes is one of the oldest inhabited islands in the world, with a history that dates back to the Bronze Age. The island was once home to the powerful Knights of St. John, and their legacy is evident in the well-preserved medieval architecture and fortifications that can be found throughout the island. Go to take photos at Saint Paul’s Gate in the old city of Rhodes by sunrise and you’ll see why I consider Rhodes one of the best places in Greece for couples. The rising sun and the fortifications are a match made in heaven.
- Cultural heritage: Rhodes is a melting pot of cultures, with a rich history that has been shaped by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Ottoman Turks. This cultural heritage is reflected in the diverse architecture, food, and traditions that can be found throughout the island.
- Natural beauty: Rhodes is blessed with stunning natural beauty, from its sandy beaches to its rugged mountains. The island is also home to several protected natural areas, including the Rhodes National Park and the Valley of the Butterflies, which provide opportunities for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing.
- Multitude of activities: Rhodes offers a wide range of activities and attractions, making it an ideal destination for travelers of all ages. Whether you’re interested in exploring ancient ruins, sunbathing on the beach, or trying your hand at water sports, Rhodes has something to offer. If you want to visit Rhodes as a couple, consider taking some kiting lessons; according to scientific studies, such adrenaline boosts determine the release of oxytocin, the love hormone.
- Delicious cuisine: Rhodes is renowned for its delicious cuisine, which is a fusion of Greek, Turkish, and Italian flavors. From traditional tavernas serving local specialties to upscale restaurants offering gourmet dining experiences, Rhodes offers a range of dining options to suit all tastes and budgets. Enjoy an ouzo by late afternoon, then move on to one of the restaurants in the Old Rhodes town for a romantic dinner by candlelight.
It comes without saying that all of the above are things that may appeal to anyone, in a couple or not. Nevertheless, newly formed couples can benefit a lot from doing a wide variety of activities together, in order to see whether they are a good match or not. Travel is perhaps the best method to assess the future of a very young romantic relationship.
Best Places To Stay in Rhodes for Couples
- Rhodes Town is a place that caters to all types of couples, regardless of age and preferences. I highly recommend that you pick a hotel on Elli Beach, in the northern part of Rhodes island. You’ll have a huge beach to enjoy, lots of bars and restaurants, as well as some fancy night clubs.
- Lindos – Unlike Rhodes Town, Lindos features charming, narrow streets and Greek-style white-washed houses. Surrounding the Acropolis of Lindos, the town offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. This is a romantic backdrop you’re going to love sharing with your partner.

- Hotel Spirit of the Knights Rhodes – very nice building and amenities, romantic garden and an atmosphere that suits a honeymoon or a wedding celebration
- Bastion Luxury Medieval Accommodation – Medieval buildings have a special charm and this one makes no exception.
- Avalon Boutique Suites Hotel – Another exquisite representative of the Medieval style
- In Lindos:
- Lindos Del Mar Suites – Situated near the center of the village and 300 m from St. Paul’s Beach in Rhodes, Del Mar Studios is an adults-only accommodation with a view to Lindos Acropolis or the village. A snack bar that serves cocktails and light meals until late can be found next door. Symi Island
Symi is a small island in the Dodecanese archipelago. Symi isn’t one of the Greek islands with airports, but you can easily reach it by boat from Rhodes Town.
Symi Island looks like a LEGO land. Symmetrical houses scattered all over the hills, windmills, crystal blue waters, and fishing boats contribute to making Symi one of the best destinations in Greece for couples.
Best Hotels on Symi Island for Couples
Symi Garden Studios – Located near the port, these studios are decorated in a vivid and colorful style, with decor elements that give them character.
Pedi Beach Hotel – This is a hotel with a private beach. It is located on a small cove, between the beaches of Agia Marina and Agios Nikolaos.
Don’t expect proper beaches on Symi, though, as the island doesn’t count too many of those. The romantic scenery is what recommends Symi island for couples in the first place.
These are only a few of the wonderful places to spend an awesome holiday in Greece as a couple. In fact, Greece is beautiful everywhere you go. I’s suggest you rent a car and follow this 10 days itinerary across Greece. It covers lots of landmarks and many romantic spots.
